Serving Our Community
WAIT House was formed in early 1998 to address the issue of youth homelessness in our community. WAIT House incorporated in early 2001, pledging to serve the 16 to 21 year old runaway & homeless population through an emergency shelter program.
In December 2003 WAIT (Welcoming Adolescents in Transition) House opened an eight bed co-ed emergency shelter program (ESP) located in Glens Falls, New York. WAIT House is the only ESP for youth in Warren and Washington Counties. Since opening, WAIT House has provided over 24,000 bed nights to over 1,400 homeless youth.
In December 2007, WAIT House purchased an adjoining dwelling with the help of the Charles R. Wood Foundation. In 2008, WAIT House received a Homeless Housing Assistance Corporation grant that completed the capital funding needed to renovate this building into a Transitional Living Program for Homeless Pregnant and Parenting Youth. This new program welcomed its first residents on July 5, 2010.
This program is the only one of its kind in Warren and Washington Counties and will provide this vulnerable population with shelter, intensive services and case management for up to 12 months. Since opening, the TLP has provided over 14,000 bed nights to over 125 young women and 90 infants or toddlers.
WAIT House, through a Supplemental Homeless Intervention Program (SHIP) grant, provided assistance to individuals ages 18 to 25 and families with locating and retaining safe, affordable permanent housing. The program participants received 365 days of supportive services to help them maintain a stable housing situation. This grant ended 9/30/11. Over the course of the grant, WAIT House placed 304 individuals or families in permanent housing.
In October 2009, WAIT House, as the lead agency for 11 other area human service agencies, received a $2.5 million Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing (HPRP) Grant. This grant will assist individuals and families who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex Counties. WAIT House and its partner agencies provided rapid re-housing or homelessness prevention assistance to over 1,500 households in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex Counties. This grant concluded on December 21, 2011.
WAIT House, as a sub-contractor of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, is administering a Solutions to End Homelessness Program (STEHP) Grant. This grant partially funds WAIT House’s Emergency Shelter and also provides permanent housing assistance such as security deposits and short-term rental assistance.
In 2015, WAIT House received a Member Item from Senator Betty Little and began a Healthy Parenting and Monitoring Program. This was in response to several infants being tragically murdered in our area over the past few years. This program assists young families with infants or young children that may be at risk of child abuse. This new program has helped over 30 families and currently has a waiting list.
In 2016, WAIT House, as a sub-contractor of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services, began a Street Outreach Program serving Warren and Washington Counties. This program provides aid to youth who may be living on the streets, needs assessment of homeless or at-risk of homelessness youths and access to emergency shelter and services for youth ages 13 up to 21. The program also does outreach to area schools and at public events.
